The BlackBerry Torch 9800 offers a few firsts for RIM and AT&T. The Torch is RIM's first attempt at a BlackBerry that sports both a full QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen. It's also the first commercially available BlackBerry that runs the new BlackBerry 6 operating system, which offers a host of new features that include a pull-down notification curtain, universal search, and new virtual QWERTY keyboards.

While the device is largely an improvement over other BlackBerry models, there's still a number of areas that put the Torch 9800 behind some of the competition running other, more modern operating systems. Its battery life could use some work, too, but overall it's a device that BlackBerry fans will want to consider when purchasing their next smartphone.

The first thing you'll notice about the Torch, obviously, is that it looks very much like the current crop of BlackBerry devices. Besides that fact that yes, it slides open, you're basically dealing with the same industrial design that we've come to know from RIM over the past two years or so. Sure, there are variations on a theme, but side-by-side with the Bold 9700, it's obvious to see where Torch got its looks from.

The size and shape of the device is nearly identical to the 9700, and in fact, its dimensions (4.4-inches up and down by 2.4-inches across when closed) are within spitting distance of the simpler, portrait QWERTY model. The thickness differs by a tiny margin (the Torch is 0.57-inches thick, while the Bold is 0.56-inches), though for some reason it feels much more significant when holding the two in your hand. Compared to more streamlined devices like the Captivate or iPhone 4... well, it has a full keyboard, okay? The Torch keeps the familiar, metal-like (it's plastic) bezel around the edges of the phone, looping around back just as with the Bold, though this time it's split in two pieces due to the separate screen and keyboard portions of the phone. The front of the device is mostly taken up by the Torch's 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen (480 x 360, just like the Storm and Storm2), though you'll find the familiar BlackBerry call, menu, back, and end buttons and optical trackpad just below the display. Along the right side of the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rockers, and user-assignable convenience key (it defaults to the camera), while the left side houses only the Micro USB jack. Up top there are mute and lock buttons, while the phone's 5 megapixel camera and LED flash sit in a familiar spot along the back of the phone.

You may hate seeing the sent items on your BlackBerry. If you delete them one by one, they get deleted from your desktop email client and this is not good.
So, this quick little routine only takes a few seconds to setup, but then it's very quick every time after that.

Steps

Go into your messages.
Click the Trackwheel and select Search.
Scroll down and change Show from Sent and Received to Sent Only.
Scroll down and change Type from All to Email.
Click the Trackwheel and select Save.
In the Title, give it a name. Recommended: Sent Only.
For a shortcut key, pick a letter. Recommended: "A".
Click the trackwheel and click Save.
This will now search and pull up all of your sent items. To delete them all without impacting your desktop, highlight the top most date, click the trackwheel, and select Delete Prior.
Now, on a regular basis you simply:
- Go into messages.
- press Alt-A.
- view the sent only items.
- Click the trackwheel.
- Select Delete Prior. Done!

Steps

Open "Media" Application on your Blackberry 8300 Curve.
Select "Ring Tones".
Select either "All Ring Tones", "My Ring Tones" or "Preloaded Ring Tones" (I transfer all my personal Ringtones to "My Ring Tones").
Press the Blackberry button directly to the right of the green phone button (the button that looks like a dialpad).
Select "Receive Using Bluetooth" (You will see a "File Transfer - Waiting for connection" message).
Go to your MAC and open Bluetooth File Exchange.
Select "Send File".
Select the device you want to transfer your file to (in this case, a Blackberry 8300 Curve).
Click "Send".
Go to your Blackberry 8300 and Curve and notice a window asking you to "Please choose the location where you wish to save file"

New Playbook Will Include the BlackBerry Java and Android Applications

Rumors that the Playbook will contain applications from the Android finally answered as well. That the rumors are true.

Co-CEO of Research In Motion (RIM), Mike Lazaridis, on Thursday (03/24/2011) states, "Playbook that will come will be no additional BlackBerry Java and Android applications to be packaged in the BlackBerry Application World."

The application provided an Android applications from Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Playbook itself will be released simultaneously in America and Canada on 19 April.

In addition to leaks about the incorporation of different applications of this platform, RIM also announced that Playbook will be equipped with HTML5 and Flash. To support the feature game, Ideaworks and Unity Lab Technologies will develop the engine and its game platform.

With this information officially, then later Playbook will contain no less than 25 thousand applications from the Blackberry Java and 200 thousand more applications on Android.

BlackBerry batteries are not easy to get out. Here's a very simple way to reboot without having to go to the trouble.

Steps

Press ALT+CAP+Backspace to reboot your stuck BlackBerry.
As soon as the screen comes back up, press ALT+CAP+Backspace again.
Check it is functioning. If it comes back to life, you don't need to remove the batteries.

Tips

Note: The first time you press ALT+CAP+Backspace, your Blackberry will release your cell connection and re-acquire. In order to truly reboot your Blackberry, press ALT+CAP+Backspace, and as soon as the screen comes back up, press ALT+CAP+Backspace again.
On the 8310, this only works if you press the right hand caps key.

How to Set a Password on a Blackberry

Security is everything these days. Including mobile phones, so you need to secure your Blackberry soon. This is how to change a password on your Blackberry: Note: This article concerns a Blackberry curve using AT&T; results may vary on provider.

Steps

Go to the "Options" menu, there is a spanner icon on it.
Scroll down the menu to "Security Options". Click it.
It will take you to a screen with multiple choices on it, scroll down to "General Settings" click it.
This takes you to another screen, follow these steps on this screen:
- Click the option for "Password:", it is automatically disabled. Click it.
- Choose the option that says, "Enabled".
- A screen will appear, enter your password. If no screen appears, you may have already set a password for another application, (Password Keeper etc.) that is your default password.
- Set your number of password attempts. This is how many times you can guess your password before your phone is wiped/blanked of all it's memory. Use with caution.
- Security Timeout means if you are not active on your phone for a certain period of time, it will automatically "Keyboard Lock" and you will have to enter your password.
- Select yes or no for "Prompt on Application Install".
Finish up. You have now set your password!

Warnings

Make the password easy to remember, if you forget it, everything in your phone will be wiped, including addresses!
Just because your phone gets wiped, doesn't mean it can't get stolen.

BlackBerry Storm: How to Removing IT Policy

Follow these instructions only if you know what you are doing.These instructions can actually downgrade certain BlackBerry’s abilities (i.e. permanent loss of support for Bluetooth keyboards) if your BlackBerry actually does not already have an IT policy installed. These instructions are meant as a last resort to regain BlackBerry capabilities, in the event your BlackBerry is encumbered by a restrictive leftover IT policy after removal from a BES. (i.e. eBay purchased BlackBerry)
Removing IT Policy.
This is a How-To for removing IT policy from your BB. In essence, what this does is apply a blank IT policy to the device. The blank IT policy does, unfortunatly, leave some IT policy firewalls in place, however. For instance “keystroke injection” is set by default to “deny” on most IT policies. This blank policy won’t give back “allow” for this feature. This becomes a problem if you desire to use a Bluetooth keyboard. You’ll be unable to use the keyboard. If a way is found to get this back then I’ll edit this post accordingly. A quick check to see if your BB is under IT policy can be done by going to Options/Security on your Device. If you see any references to IT Policy whatsoever, then you have a potentially restrictive IT Policy that can be removed.
The Disclaimer/Intended Use.
This guide is intended for use by people that own their own Blackberry, and for whatever reason, have inherited a company’s IT policy on their device. Really, there are two scenarios where this guide is useful. You bought a Blackberry on eBay and are unable to make changes to the settings or install Third Party Applications. You have a Blackberry that was previously connected to a company’s BES and, for whatever reason, you no longer intend to connect to that BES.Important: If you’re still connected to a company BES, and simply want to install the latest and greatest third party application I would not recommend this approach. Talk to your BES administrators and ask them to grant you the appropriate rights. There are two problems in using this guide to bypass your company’s security policy. First, whenever you reconnect to the company server, your security settings will revert back to how they were. Second, and perhaps more importantly, you run the risk of getting fired.
Procedure:

Ensure the Blackberry Desktop Manager is installed using Blackberry Internet Service, and not Blackberry Enterprise Server. If you are unsure, it would probably be a good idea to uninstall the Desktop Manager and start again. If you don’t have the CD that came with your Blackberry, the Software can be downloaded here.
Download the file policy.bin and save it in your Blackberry installation directory (C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry).
Wipe your Blackberry, creating a backup if necessary. Select Options/Security/Wipe on the Device. If this option is unavailable, you may have to install the latest software on your Blackberry. You need to Download and install the latest OS for your device. Connect your device, open the Desktop Manager, select Application Loader, and follow the prompts.
Close the Desktop Manager if it is open.
Step 5

* From the Windows XP Start Menu select Run…, and at the prompt type regedit. In the tree on the left hand side, navigate to: * HKEY_Current_Users\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\PolicyManager * Right-Click the Policy Manager Folder and select New/String Value. Name the value Path. Now, Double-Click the Path Subkey and set Value Data to: * C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\policy.bin
6. Open the Desktop Manager.
7. Connect the Device. Verification
Once complete, the Options/Security screen on your Blackberry should not contain references to an IT Policy, you should now be able to change all settings (including password prompts), and install Third Party Applications.

The BlackBerry Magnum is the rumored next generation BlackBerry smartphone. It is said to feature a Blackberry Storm-like touchscreen as well as a full QWERTY physical keyboard like the BlackBerry Curve, and may be the United States version of the Storm.

The way is very easy and simple, if you buy from dealerships that provide blackberry data transfer facility, you do not need to be confused.

If you want to do the transfer yourself, here's how:

1. Backup via Desktop Manager
Backup your data before the data on your old blackberry using desktop manager. If you have never installed. Find the software cd in the box and install your blackberry to the desktop. Or just from the website Donwload blackberry.com

Open the desktop manager, plug your bb to usb cable to your desktop. Click the backup and follow the instructions to backup.

2. Restore
Plug it into your new Blackberry and restore menu and all the data can be transferred to your new blackberry, including contacts, phone book, calendar and contacts PIN Fuel your friends.

After the restore, open the blackberry messenger contacts lists of new and old fuel will appear on your new fuel.

Although with the new PIN. RIM will automatically connect the link back to all your contacts in a few minutes including blackberries recover your groups. Process automatically, you do not need to contact your friends to add / reinvite.

To ensure this process smoothly without any error that does not count, I'll connect my email back before opening Blackberry Messenger application. Because if the contacts list does not terbackup well, I can restore bbm contacts list Remotely restore email.

Two problems that we encountered during the upgrade to Onyx Bold

1. Handheld Not Ready
At first, when we first go to onyx, we did not find the browser "Internet Explorer" in the browser configuration settings and email settings icon even when the insert SIM card.

After nearly 30 minutes, we insert the SIM card to the newly emerging Onyx Internet Explorer browser, email settings and other icon.

2. Desktop Manager Error
By the time we try to restore the data through the desktop manager with plug Onyx to Desktop Manager (DM), DM errors at the time of connection. How many times we tried to turn off the DM, and connect back to life, the same result, DM error and need to close, report to Microsoft ...

We could restart the computer and the results were the same. Time to think whether our desktop manager 5.0.1 not suitable for Onyx because the Bold and Jav not a problem.

Finally after a restart, emerged icon Blackberry Desktop Manager 5.0.1 update available in the system tray 29mb. Is Onyx is a little different? After the upgrade the desktop manager, just smooth connection and restore Onyx Onyx is also smooth the data.

Hopefully you do not find this problem, although there are, now you know how to handle it and do not need to shock.

How To Backup Blackberry 3rd Party Application

I believe many of you have experience to upgrade you Blackberry device OS or wipe handheld to default setting when encounter error. No doubt, by doing this it may solve your blackberry’s issue, but your will lost all your data.

Even though you can restore the backup from Desktop Manager (provided you have the backup file), but you still lost all those 3rd party application. The only way you can do is install back each application one by one at OTA.

Today I will share the idea to backup those 3rd applications at you Blackberry device. With simple steps, you will able to restore back all application without download it again at OTA. Following are the step by step…

1) Please install Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.7 (You can download it at http://www.blackberry.com)
2) Connect Blackberry device to computer
3) Launch Blackberry Desktop Manager then click on Device Switch Wizard

4) Select “Third-party Applications” only then click Next

5) At this point, Desktop Manager will back up 3rd party apps. When finished PLEASE DO NOT CLICK NEXT OR CANCEL.
6) Using Windows build-in Search feature to search the folder with same name with your Blackberry PIN and *.alx file. (make sure you enable hidden files & folders searching) Usually you can get your folder at below location

C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Name]\Local Settings\Temp

7) Make a copy for both the folder and *.alx. All these files are your 3rd party application backup. Please keep it in a safer place.
8) Go back to the Desktop Manager and cancel the process.

How To Restore Back Your 3rd Party Application
1) Connect Blackberry device to computer
2) Launch Blackberry Desktop Manager then click on Application Loader
3) Select Add/Remove Applications
4) Click Browse button and select the *.alx file where you have backup
5) Click next button to restore. Done.

Step by step to configure Blackberry as Tethered Modem (for Maxis and Celcom)

You computer must have Blackberry Desktop Manager. This is the most important software must be installed into your computer. You can download at Blackberry Official website.
Please connect your Blackberry Phone to computer with USB cable.
If you already install Blackberry Desktop Manager, you should see a “Standard Modem” under Device Manager. Right click the Standard Modem, and select Properties
Go to Advanced tab – insert the Extra initialization Command as below

Go to Diagnostics tab – press Query Modem button. Make sure you are successful query the modem. If you fail to query, check the USB connection or restart your phone. If you successful, click ok button to close the windows.

Go to: Options -> Advanced Options -> SIM CARD -> Then type: MEPD
Your phone will shows
Note: Each value should status “Disable”. If you see any “Active” value, probably this phone is locked by provider.

To unlock the phone, type: MEP alt + E
The phone will show up dialog screen for you to insert 13 digits unlock code. Once you insert correctly, phone will become unlocked permanently.
The 13 digits unlock code is vary from phone to phone; it’s depend on phone IMEI. To obtain the unlock code, you should contact your service provider.

Blackberry Internet Service
BIS is allows POP3 and IMAP email integration for the personal user. It allows up to 10 email accounts to be accessed, including many popular email clients such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL.

Email configuration in Blackberry phone is extremely simple. If you would like to access personal email such as Yahoo, Gmail… then you need BIS from service provider and just with below simple configuration steps.

How to setup email account on your BlackberryPress Menu, go to Setup > E-mail setting

You need a Blackberry Account to configure email. If you don’t have, click on “Create New Account” to create one. If you already have, just login with your username and password. Once you already login, you will see below screen

The BlackBerry Tablet - PlayBook

Research In Motion's annual BlackBerry Developer Conference, CEO Mike Lazaridis announced the company's new tablet the PlayBook. The tablet will utilize an OS created by the recently acquired QNX (just as we'd heard previous to the announcement) called the BlackBerry Tablet OS which will offer full OpenGL and POSIX support alongside web standards such as HTML5 (which is all tied into RIM's new WebWorks SDK).

Lazaridis was joined on stage by the company's founder, Dan Dodge, who said that "QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before," and added that the PlayBook would be "an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players." RIM also touted the PlayBook's ability to handle Flash content via Flash 10.1, as well as Adobe AIR apps. The new slate which Lazaridis described as "the first professional tablet" will sport a 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multitouch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU (the company calls it the "fastest tablet ever"), 1GB of RAM, and a 3 megapixel front-facing camera along with a 5 megapixel rear lens (and yes, there will be video conferencing).

There was no mention of onboard storage capacity during the keynote, though the devices we just spied in our eyes-on post are labeled 16GB and 32GB on their back panels. The PlayBook will be capable of 1080p HD video, and comes equipped with an HDMI port as well as a microUSB jack, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1. The device clocks in at a svelte 5.1- by 7.6-inches, is only 0.4-inches thick, and weighs just 400g (or about 0.9 pounds).

In terms of interface, the OS looks like a mashup of webOS and the BlackBerry OS, even allowing for multitasking via what amounts to a "card" view. Interestingly, RIM and QNX boasted of the PlayBook's multimedia and gaming functions, but Mike Lazaridis also described the tablet as "an amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry." That's due largely in part to a function of the tablet which allows you to siphon data off of your BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth tethering and display it on your PlayBook (a la the ill-fated Palm Foleo).

While the PlayBook doesn't seem to rely on phone content alone, the press release from the company says that users can "use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data." RIM didn't hand out any solid launch dates beyond "early 2011," and of course, there was no mention of retail price. BlackBerry user should know their BlackBerry smartphone can only perform either ring only, vibrate only or vibrate then ring by default. For the feature “vibrate while ring” is still not available for all BlackBerry smartphones. By install third party apps, you can make this feature available on your lovely BlackBerry smartphone. How to upgrade BlackBerry OS

First you will need to download the BlackBerry OS software file to your computer. You can search from Google with keyword “Blackberry OS [Carrier name]”.

Be sure you selected the right blackberry model then download the latest OS file to desktop. There are unofficial versions (some call it leak version) of blackberry OS floating around the internet, do it at your own risk if you decided to use those unofficial OS.

Install Blackberry OS software into default location (Basically just click next until end during installation) If you’re using software version from a different service provider other than your own, after the installation wizard is done you will need go to delete the Vendor.xml file. It can be found following this path:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader

After the deletion of the Vendor.xml file (if needed), plug in your device to the computer via USB cable and then double click on the Loader.exe file in the same folder

Click next for the first screen, the Wizard should automatically detect the port and should display USB and your PIN number. Like screenshot below

Next the Application Loader Wizard will read your devices system configuration. System will allow you to choose any applications that you would like to install into Blackberry handheld. Here you need to make sure applications such as BlackBerry Attachment Service, BlackBerry Messenger, and 3rd Party Application boxes are ticked, and any other applications you want installed to the device and select ‘Next’.

Completing the Application Loader Wizard screen will come up next and and show you exactly what Applications are being installed. Make sure everything you want installed is selected and select ‘Finish’.

It is depending on Blackberry device and can take up between 20-45 minutes for OS installation. PLEASE DO NOT UNPLUG CABLE FROM THE DEVICE. THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR DEVICE BRICKED AND MAKE YOUR DEVICE IN DEEP TROUBLE. Be patient and wait until the Application Loader Wizard is states Loading Operation is Complete.

At this point, you can unplug your device and your device is restarting. Usually it will take long time for the first restart (approximately 12min). Enjoy the new Operating System.

Blackberry Empathy

For their sponsored project held by RIM Blackberry at the Art Center College of Design, designers Kiki and Daniel had to incorporate an interface that integrates human emotions with the concept of social networking. The result of this exercise was the Empathy concept. The phone is used in conjunction with a biometrics ring that is worn by the user to collect “emotional data”. Spec-wise it features a transparent OLED screen that becomes transparent when not in use and opaque during interaction. The front is all touch surface, while on the back there is a physical keyboard.

As Daniel describes the interface:

It is of course touch based and all the user’s connections are shown graphically so you can see who is connected to whom. Each contact has an avatar that is encompassed by two colored rings. The inner colored ring shows the contact’s previous emotional state, and the outer ring represents the contact’s current emotional state. It is important to show the shift in emotions in order to see how an event has affected that contact.
Another important feature that we felt was important was the “Emotional Health Chart”. This chart would monitor the user’s emotional health through an indefinite period of time. One would be able to see how a certain event, or phone call/ message has affected the user. Obviously, if the chart shows someone is always upset, there would be a problem… If permitted, a user would be able to view other user’s charts as well.

Since Blackberry Curve 8520 launching, RIM has it next Curve model 8530. I not so sure on the detail, but someone said it could be a Curve2 model. Product spec comparison as below:

There is a little surprise that 8530 support 3G and built-in GPS. Unfortunate 8530 screen resolution still low compare to 8900.

Avatars Are Not Displayed in BBM5

May I know anyone of you encounter above issue? I got many friend complain that BBM5 avatars is not show to other contacts. They can see their own picture but they can’t see other friend picture and other friend also can’t see his picture. I would usually recommend the standard battery pull, having that contact re-load their photo, re-download BBM 5.0 or re-add the contact. There is no guaranty to resolved; even RIM still haven’t provide any absolute resolutions yet (right now).

Here I just want to share my workaround. I found it really work correctly with my BlackBerry.
1. At BBM5, press menu button – option – backup, select back up files locally. (you may need to choose a location to store your backup file)
2. When backup completed, go back to previous screen and select restore.
3. click on “restore using a backup file from device”, choose the backup file you have backed up just now.
4. During restore process, BBM5 will restart automatically.
5. Check your friend contact picture again, it should be able to resolve.

How to sync BlackBerry contact to Outlook

Make sure your Ms Outlook is installed and setup correctly. Personal folder *.pst file must be created with Outlook. You may create a new *.pst file at Control panel-Click on Mail icon. (In this post, I assume you should setup Outlook correctly).

Connect you BlackBerry smartphone to PC with USB cable.
Run Blackberry Desktop Manager, click Synchronize, then click on configure synchronization. (below screen will appear)

Click the Synchronization button at the right side.
The Intellisync windows will appear, check the “Address Book”.
System will ask you to select desktop application, please select Microsoft Outlook then click next.
Select you desire direction of synchronization. Usually I will select “one way sync from device to Outlook”. This is mean BlackBerry smartphone to overwrite Outlook. (no change to Blackberry smartphone). Click next.
Select you Outlook profile then click next and finish. (see below screen)

At this point, you should go back to BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Click the synchronize at the left side and click the synchronize button at the middle of screen.

Maximizing Battery Life On Your BlackBerry

Bad coverage = battery drain
If you are in an area of weak coverage, your battery will drain very quickly. Your BlackBerry smartphone is constantly looking for, finding, and trying hard to receive network signal.

3rd party app running in the background
Make sure that app is closed when you are not using it. For proper apps closing, in the application, bring up your menu, scroll to the bottom and choose “Close” or “Exit”.

Using 3G signal will drain battery fast
GSM/EDGE signal will have better battery life than a 3G. The benefit is that 3G have faster data transfer speeds than their GSM/EDGE. GSM/EDGE is good enough for normal usage and messaging (almost no lagging), therefore you don’t need 3G signal. Only turn on 3G, when you need high speed internet browsing.

Update BlackBerry OS may result in improve battery life
You should always keep the BB OS up to date with the most recent CARRIER AUTHORIZED (NOT Leaked OS). Sometimes a new OS is significantly improving battery life. For example, the most recent OS update for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 improved battery life by almost 50%!

Backlight Brightness: The lower setting is helps to conserve battery life.
Backlight Timeout: The longer the screen is on, the more battery you’re using.

BlackBerry Windows Live Messenger auto disconnect?

Do you notice that BlackBerry Windows Live Messenger will disconnect automatically? This is due to carrier network unstable then affect connection lost to MSN network. Maybe some other country that has better and stable network coverage so BB user didn’t encounter this issue, but in Malaysia I believe most BB users are encounter this issue.

Here is my idea to solve this issue. During login screen, please check the “automatic Sign-In” option. With this option enable, Windows Live Messenger will auto reconnect back to network when disconnected.

Official BBM 5.0.0.55 no spell check?

BBM 5.0.0.55 now is official release. BB user can download it at BlackBerry official website. Not much changes compare to previous 5.0.0.33. Just Added “Delete Backup File” under options. But I found this version is run faster and smoother.

Some weird thing I found .55 release seems to not have spell check if you are on 4.6.x.x OS. Unless you are using 5.0.x.x OS, then spell check is remain there. My opinion, if you really need spell check in 4.6.x.x OS, please use BBM 5.0.0.33

How to turn off BBM Group notification

Most BB users should know BlackBerry Messenger has added “BBM Group” feature since version 5 onward. This is a great feature allow you to join a group (Max is 30 people) for group chat. Of course you will meet more friends in the group chat.

The disadvantage is the more group you join (while people are aggressively chatting in the group), there will be many messages push into your BlackBerry phone. And notification sounds are non-stop ringing in you BlackBerry phone too.
Actually there is a way to disable a group notification and I found not many people know how to disable it. Here I share the secret. Go to BBM Group, press menu button, then select “Group details”. Below screen will appear.

Scroll down to the bottom part. Change the setting “Turn Off All Notifications For This Group” to YES.

How to unzip file on BlackBerry smartphone

I believe most people are using zip format when sending email attachment. Zip file is well known format and file size is smaller in order to reduce network bandwidth. But zip / unzip functionality is doesn’t support in BlackBerry smartphone by default, therefore BB users may need to install 3rd party apps instead.

Blackberry Swiss Army Knife Tool (BBSAK)

Most BlackBerry advance users should know about JL_Cmdr. If you have a bricked device and no other way to try, JL_Cmdr comes to the rescue.

JL-Cmdr is a DOS base application running in Windows. No doubt, JL_Cmdr is an useful application but it outdated UI still waiting to improved. Due to that, Blackberry Swiss Army Knife Tool (BBSAK) comes into place serve as a replacement with nicer GUI and user friendly.

BBSAK builds upon the functionality of JL_Cmdr, even more than what JL_Cmdr can perform. BBSAK gives you the ability to take screenshots, perform a factory reset, wipe a device, load an OS, backup 3rd party application, load device application, install COD files and a lot more.

Disable BlackBerry event log to free up memory

Do you know that your BlackBerry smartphone actually keep track every activity into event log? Event log is located into a secret place and you need special key press to access it. Due to event log keep track everything in your BlackBerry from time to time, therefore it will gradually eat up more system memory.

Usually we don’t need the event log information, I would suggest you disable event log to free up memory. Following is the secret to disable BlackBerry event log.

At BlackBerry home screen press ALT + LGLGIf you successful, you will access to event log windows

BlackBerry Email Account Type

Blackberry Email via BIS
This is the simplest way to get BlackBerry email with BIS (BlackBerry Internet Services) from the carrier. BIS allow up to 10 email accounts to be configured into BlackBerry. POP3 internet email like yourname@yahoo.com or yourname@gmail.com also can be configured into your BlackBerry smartphone.

Blackberry Email via BESIf you would like to get corporate email on your BlackBerry smartphone, you need BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) from carrier. Many companies will set up a BES in their exchange server then manage all the corporate mobile email from a central location.

BlackBerry Email via the BlackBerry RedirectorFor corporate users that do not have BES but still want to get corporate email from a BlackBerry smartphone with BIS. They can use “BlackBerry Redirector”. BlackBerry Redirector is a part of the feature in BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

For user who wants to receive corporate email, they can leave their company PC on with BlackBerry Redirector running. The BlackBerry Redirector software will “listen” to the user’s corporate email inbox then forward that email to BlackBerry smartphone.

The key difference between BES and BlackBerry Redirector is BES listens at the server level, where BlackBerry Redirector listens at the individual PC level. Therefore, user PC must be stay on to receive any new email. Anyway, for the corporate user whose company does not yet have a BES, BlackBerry Redirector really come into place to provide alternative solution.

Keep in mind that the BlackBerry Redirector is only for forwarding email to BlackBerry smartphone. To perform other tasks like deleting email, calendar, users must access to PC. Furthermore, BlackBerry Redirector will not function if the PC is turned off.

BlackBerry users should know system will become very slow after long time use without restarting. Actually this is same applied to every smartphones in the market because its internal memory is fully utilized without a proper clearing by apps.

Here is the little idea to release your BlackBerry internal memory or cache

Clear browser cache
Open the browser, press menu button, select Options, select Cache Operation. Clear every cache or history then quit.

Clear phone memory

go to phone Options, select Security Options, select Memory Cleaning, press menu button then select Clean Now

The easiest way to delete all BlackBerry address book contacts

I believe most people will suggest using wipe handheld feature under Phone Option, Security Options, General Settings. By doing this, all address book contact are deleted, but you will also delete everything in your BlackBerry (all setting had been reset back to default setting too).

What about if I need to delete address book contact only without losing any other information from my Blackberry? Instead of delete your address book contact one by one, actually you can do it with BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Connect you BlackBerry to PC with USB cable
Run BlackBerry Desktop Manager
Go to Backup and Restore, select Advance, following screen will appear

Highlight “Address book” & “Address book - ALL”, then click the clear button.

BlackBerry Redirector

Is there any way to send / receive company mail in your BlackBerry smartphone without BES? The answer is YES. You can use “Blackberry Redirector” feature in Desktop Manager.

There something I need to clarify first before we move further. The key difference between BES and BlackBerry Redirector is BES listens at the mail server level, where BlackBerry Redirector listens at the individual PC level. Therefore, your company PC must be stay on in order to send / receive email.

Let’s start to setup BlackBerry Redirector in your company PC
1) If you haven’t install Desktop Manager (DM) yet, please install it now. During installation, you will reach below screen. If you already installed DM, you may need to go to control panel, add/remove program, double click BlackBerry DM, select modify. Then you will reach below screen too.

2) Please select “Integrate with a work email account”, then click next. You will reach below screen. Keep in mind that BlackBerry Redirector is only support limited mail server as below screen. If don’t know which mail server, kindly check with IT in your company.

3) Select the right mail server accordingly. Here I will select “Microsoft Exchange” then click next.

4) Please select “Redirect massages using the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector” then click next until you finish installation.
5) Congratulation. You have completed the setup.

How to configure BlackBerry Redirector
1) Connection your BlackBerry Smartphone to PC with USB cable.
2) Run BlackBerry DM. Usually you will see a windows asking you to choose the MS Outlook profile. Please choose the right Outlook profile then click OK button.
3) There will be an “Email Settings” windows pop up. Just click YES button and follow the step until you completed to generate new encryption key. Please refer to below screen.

4) Once you have finish generate a new encryption key, you will return back to BlackBerry DM main screen. The setup is completed, now you can close the DM and unplug your phone from computer.
5) You will found a new email icon in your BlackBerry Smartphone.
6) In order to send / receive email from your BlackBerry Smartphone, please make sure following applications are ALWAYS STAY ON in your computer.
a. BlackBerry Desktop Redirector (press start button -> all programs -> blackberry)
b. Ms Outlook

25 Essential Blackberry tips and tricks

You probably bought a BlackBerry for the keyboard and fantastic battery life but there's more to it than that.

You can just pick a BlackBerry up and start using it, because all you need to do is press the Menu key to get the main options on every screen - but the BlackBerry OS hides a huge number of clever tricks and shortcuts that make it faster and simpler to get things done.

There are some tips you won't need often - like pressing Alt, Del and the right-hand Caps key at the same time to reboot instead of just restarting; others you'll use all the time, like pressing the red 'hang up' key to get back to the home screen and clicking the spanner icon on the home screen to open Options. Here are our top 25 Blackberry tips.

1. Use the keyboard less

BlackBerry has always had a QWERTY keyboard and you can type everything out in full - but you can save time with the built-in shortcuts. Press space twice at the end of a sentence to get the full stop and an automatic capital on the next word.

Don't bother with apostrophes in words like I'm and isn't (type im and the BlackBerry will correct it for you); there are other handy abbreviations like 'wel' to get 'we'll' and 'il' to get 'I'll' and you can add your own with Options > AutoText.

2. Quick capitals

You don't need Shift - press and hold a letter key to type the upper case letter.

3. Skip Symbol

If you're typing an email address into a field that expects an email address, don't bother looking for how to type the @; just hit space and BlackBerry with put the @ in for you. Press space when you need the . in the middle of the email address and it will fill that in, too. Do the same for URLs in the browser; pressing space fills in the periods faster than typing them by hand.

4. Fast select

There's a Select command on the menu for choosing what to copy and paste - but you can make a selection just by holding down the Shift key as you scroll the trackball.

5. Keyboard shortcuts

Save on scrolling by using 't' to get to the top of any email message, web page or other long screen and 'b' to get to the bottom. There are specific shortcuts for all the built-in apps like using the Mute button to pause videos or music or skipping to the next or previous track by pressing and holding the volume up and down keys (which also zoom in and out in the camera - although many apps use I and O to zoom); there's a list in the Help tool.

6. Choose dialling or shortcuts

Under Options > Phone Options > General Options you can set Dial From Home Screen to Yes or No; if you set it to Yes you can start typing a name to dial the number on the home screen, if you set it to No you can type the first letter of apps on the home screen to open them (M for Mail, B for browser, C to compose email - and oddly N for Messenger, L for Calendar and U for Calculator).

7. Web columns

Press Z in the web browser to reflow the page into a column the size of the BlackBerry screen so it's easier to read; press Z again to go back to a normal page view you can scroll around.

8. Turn on JavaScript

To save memory and make pages load faster, the BlackBerry browser usually has JavaScript turned off by default; use Options > Browser Configuration > Support JavaScript to turn it back on and make more pages load correctly.

9. Which browser?

There are three different browsers on the BlackBerry; a WAP browser for viewing content from your mobile network, the BlackBerry HTML browser (and a hotspot browser that prioritises the Wi-Fi connection). If you have problems accessing or loading Web pages, choose Options > Browser Configuration and set Browser to BlackBerry Browser and make sure Options > General Properties > Default Browser is also set to BlackBerry Browser.

10. Don't get mobile Web sites

You can also try changing Browser Identification from BlackBerry to Firefox or IE to force the full versions of specific pages to load instead of the cut-down mobile versions - but they might be slow or not load fully.

You can search for contacts, messages and inside files and web pages - press S to search in contacts and messages and F to search in other apps.

If you get both work and personal email on your BlackBerry, you can change the colour of either set of messages. Choose Options > Security Options >Information> Message Outline Colours and either Enterprise Messages or Other Messages.

13. Menu multi-tasking

BlackBerry has had multitasking for years but it's subtly done; apps stay running so you can switch back to them (unless you run out of memory when they're closed automatically). To get back to another app, press and hold the Menu button to get the task switcher.

14. Lock with mute

Some BlackBerrys have both a lock and a mute button on the top edge, others - like the original Bold - only have a mute button. You can always lock the screen by scrolling down to the Lock icon but it's faster to just press and hold mute until the screen locks (do the same to unlock it).

15. Real convenience

There are two 'convenience keys' - one on each side of the BlackBerry; you've probably found one of them by knocking it and hearing that irritating 'say a command' message. If you never use voice command, choose Options > Screen/Keyboard to change the buttons to something more useful - starting the camera, opening the music player or launching your favourite app.

16. Tweak your trackball

Use Options > Screen/Keyboard and scroll to the bottom of the page to choose the horizontal and vertical sensitivity (how far it moves across the screen when you move it) and whether you hear a click as it rolls.

The slightly confusing way to put a call on speakerphone is to use Menu > Activate Speakerphone; the even more confusing way to turn it off is Menu > Activate Handset - or you can use the $ key to turn it on and off. (And the $ key produces the $ sign in email, use Options > Screen/Keyboard > Currency key to set it to £ instead).

18. Say a command

Voice command does more than voice dialling; if you want to check your signal and battery strength you can wade through the Options menu or you can hit the voice command button and say 'status' or 'check battery' and 'check signal strength'.

19. Say it again

Voice recognition works quite well, but you can train it by reading a list of numbers and words; choose Options > Voice Dialing> Adapt Voice.

VOICE TRAINING: Choose Adapt Voice and your BlackBerry will ask you to read a list of sample names and numbers.

20. Hidden Help

The hidden 'Help Me!' screen shows the signal strength, battery level, device PIN, free space, space in use, IMEI, OS version, how long the BlackBerry has been on and some other info that can be useful for troubleshooting. View it by pressing Alt + Caps + H.

21. Archive, don't uninstall

Only the very latest BlackBerry models have anything like enough memory for all the apps you want. When you run out of space, pick the ones you use least and archive them to your microSD card (this only works with apps from App World). Select the app in the My World sections of App World and choose Menu > Archive; archived apps have a green arrow on their icons and you can click them to reinstall - but you may have to restart to archive or restore an app.

22. Save power overnight

BlackBerry is very frugal on battery life and you can make it last even longer by having yours turn itself off overnight and back on in the morning. Choose Options > Auto On/Off; you can have different on and off times for weekdays and weekends.

Keypad Lock in OS5

After upgrade the BlackBerry OS from Ver 4 to Ver 5, you may find that keypad lock function is no longer available. If you press and hold “A”, your BlackBerry phone will turned into standby mode instead of keypad lock. To wake up phone, you need to press the mute button at top left corner.

Here to share an idea to lock your BlackBerry with “Password Lock”1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options.
2. Click Password.
3. Set Password to “Enable”
4. Click Change Password, then insert your password.
5. Display the menu and click Save.

Basically Blackberry smartphone allow user to key in password up to 10 times. If after 10 times user still unable to insert the correct password, then BlackBerry Smartphone will reset to factory default setting automatically and you will lost all the data in your Blackberry. No worry! your Blackberry still can function except all data are deleted only. It is to protect data being leak to other people. Therefore I would recommend you always backup your Blackbbery data via desktop manager.

Remove IT Policy in BlackBerry

Some users have a BlackBerry which previously used to connect to BES and BlackBerry had been placed a restrictive IT Policy into it. Once the IT policy is enabled, you will not able to change certain settings, or install Third Party Applications.

This is common issue especially for those people bought BlackBerry on EBay and are unable to make changes to the settings or install Third Party Applications. A quick check to your IT Policy, just go to Options -> Status, then key in command code “buyr”

There are many methods in the internet to remove IT policy, but no one is 100% guaranty successful. I found myself the following method is most workable with higher successful rate. So, please do not ask me for support if you have tried on my method but still not working.

Note: This method can only be used on a BlackBerry smartphone running OS 4.3 to 5.0. Following procedure will delete all data and applications on the BlackBerry smartphone. Please backup the data before performing this procedure.

• Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed into your computer.
• Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer (Windows XP).
Press Start > Run, type “CMD” to bring out Windows command prompt
• Navigate to the Apploader folder by typing cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader and then pressing the Enter key.
• Type loader.exe /resettofactoryEnter you BlackBerry smartphone password if prompted.
• Wait until reset process is completed. Check the IT policy again.

Good luck and hope you can successfully remove IT policy.

Every BlackBerry smartphone has an unique “PIN number”. This PIN number is hardcoded in BlackBerry smartphone. Thus, it can’t be changed even if you switch the SIM card. My advice when you bought a new BlackBerry smartphone, the very first thing you should do is find out the PIN number.

BlackBerry PIN is playing important role when everytime signal in or out, browsing the internet, sending and receiving emails, instant message and etc. Knowing your friend's PINs, you can actually compose a PIN message to them directly. How to remove uninstalled App in Blackberry App World

When you uninstall an app from BlackBerry AppWorld, the particular app will fall into Uninstalled/Archive category in My world. Although it provides the fastest way to get it back if needed. The problem is, the uninstalled apps still show up in My World. And also the uninstalled apps will be getting more from time to time if you keep on installing and uninstalling new apps.

There is a simple fix to remove those uninstall app in My World. Just open BlackBerry AppWorld, hold down the "ALT" key while typing the letters “RST”. If you successful, BlackBerry AppWorld will exit automatically. You need to re-open back BlackBerry AppWorld and those uninstalled app will disappear now.

Please take note above method is not apply to BlackBerry AppWorld 2.0 or above. In BlackBerry AppWorld 2.0, the app list will forever contain all apps that you have ever installed, whether free or paid. It will grouped by installed or uninstalled apps. Furthermore, each group can be collapsed, so you don't actually have to see your uninstalled apps at all

RIM has finally unveiled its tablet PC- BlackBerry Playbook. Just with only 10 mm, thickness, 7-inch WSVGA capacitive multi-touch screen support, the Playbook runs the BlackBerry Tablet OS that support for symmetric multiprocessing. We can see that RIM is really plan to challenge it competitor Apple Ipad. I think RIM is aims to take over the enterprise segment with their new gadget- Playbook.

How you share your BlackBerry contact to others? Of course there are many way to share BlackBerry contact to other, but I found one of the easiest way via instant messaging.

Send Blackberry contact via Windows Live Messenger:

In Windows Live Messenger, click on your friend to open up the chat windows
Press menu button, select “send file”
Popup windows will display in middle of screen, click “Contact” button
Select you desire contact which will send to your friend
Finish

Above steps is just an idea sharing. You may apply the same idea in BlackBerry Messenger or other IM application in Blackberry. Please try!

Free GPS Navigation on Blackberry

I have been playing around with the free GPS navigation software from amAze. I was not expecting too much given it's free but I am impressed after using it. I tried the route from my work to my home The voice directions are accurate and the voice is loud, clear and pleasant. I intentionally tried to drive off the route and amAze GPS was able to detect that and automatically calculated a new route. When approaching an intersection that requires me to make a turn, the system will warn me three times ( in 1 mile, 500 feet and right now).

The only thing I don't like so much is the startup time. It takes almost 1 minute just to start the software. It seems it is trying to connect to some server to download some data. Don't know why it needs to happen on every startup. To get around this, most of the time I would just keep the application in memory instead of exiting. It does not seem to drain the battery too badly like some other GPS applications (e.g. Google Map).

Trade Stocks from Your Blackberry

I have just installed this great stock trading application E*Trade Mobile Pro and I like it a lot. I can easily get stock quotes, news, access my watch list and even trade.

Note that you do NOT need to be an E*Trade customer to use this app. Without an account, there are some features that are disabled (e.g. real-time quote streaming) but it still a very useful application for tracking stocks. E*Trade is pretty smart to use this application to attract people to sign up for an E*Trade account just to get the additional features.

My first installation attempt failed. I searched the web and the only suggestion I found is to reboot the Blackberry. I tried that and it did not work. Finally, I managed to fix this by deleting some unused applications from my Blackberry. So make sure your BB has enough free memory to install this app.

Changing Email Signature in Blackberry

A reader asked if I can post instructions on how to modify the email signature in Blackberry. The instructions here are intended for the users of BIS (Blackberry Internet Service). If you are using BES (Blackberry Enterprise Service), you will need to contact your IT department.

1) Go to the BIS web site. Here are the links for the common US providers.

You will see the following (My example is using AT&T)

You may need to create a new user if this is the first time you are using this. Otherwise proceed to log in

2) You should see a list of email accounts that are accessible from your Blackberry. Click on the Edit icon on the right hand side for the particular email account you want to manage

3) You can now change the Signature for the email account. Click Save and you are done! Note that you can have different signatures for different email accounts.

Here are some tips that can be applied to get around for the Blackberry more quickly accessible.
1. Make sure you stay in the internal memory capacity is sufficient.

2. Multimedia files make sure you are in Media Card / Storage Card.
3. Get used to pull the battery once every 2-3 days to remove the remnants of unused files.
4. Here are some shortcuts that can help,
- To see the rest of the file or files free, do not you run out of your time to open the Options> Status. Simply press the “Alt” + “Left Shift” + “Letter H” simultaneously. This shortcut will show vital info-info Blackberry status.
- To reset the Blackberry was no longer need to pull out the battery. Simply press the “Alt” + “Right Shift” + “Del” and your Blackberry will direct te-reset, just like pulling the battery.
5. Always routinely remove the Blackberry Browser Cache Browser Menu on the menu – Options – Cache Operations – Clear History
6. Clear Event Log on the home screen by typing ‘ALT’ + letter ‘L’ + ‘G’ + ‘L’ + ‘G’.
7. Memory Routine Cleaning by going to Options – Security Options – Enabled – Menu – Clean Now.

Where to get BlackBerry Theme Studio?

You’ll notice that BlackBerry Theme Studio actually contains two products in the suite: Theme Builder, and Composer.

BlackBerry Theme Builder is the “theme design” tool of the suite. BlackBerry Theme Builder lets you change the images that get used for things like icons, background graphics and cursors. You can also adjust the fonts, change the position of many objects on the screen, decide which applications appear and change the color and properties of things like dialog boxes.

BBNotepad - A Free Text Editor

Some of the best ideas come when we're out and about. Instead of scrambling for a pen and paper to write your thoughts down, you could use BBNotePad instead.

BBNotepad is a free text editor for that is a bit more powerful than the MemoPad app that comes built into the BlackBerry operating system. The program makes the note-taking process very quick and easy, allowing you to choose between SureType and Multitap input systems. The app can export your notes as memos or as documents in TXT format, that can then be read on any computer.

BBNotepad includes some handy editing features, including a reliable spell check and a handy text search facility. The major difference between BBNotepad and MemoPad is in the customizable settings, of which BBNotepad has many. You can alter the font size, set notes as read only, and change the reading and writing format.

BBNotepad lets you save notes either to your BlackBerry's internal storage, or to your SD card. So, it's perfect for making notes to be read on your computer, or for exchanging memos with other BlackBerry users.

It's a shame there aren't a few more formatting options, but as a slimline text editor, BBNotepad makes for a more powerful alternative to MemoPad.
